The Portuguese Grand Prix took place on 21 October 1984 at the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silvaist and was the final race of the season. The Grand Prix covered a distance of 70 laps of 4.35 km each, for a total distance of 304.5 km.
Niki Lauda of the Marlboro McLaren International Team started the race from position 11 in his MP4/2 race car and was able to make up a few positions from the start. Despite several position changes, he was able to move further up the field and finish the race in second place behind his team-mate Alain Prost.
This second place was enough for Lauda to defend his lead in the overall standings with a 0.5 point advantage over Alain Prost and to win the Formula 1 World Championship title. It was the third title for Lauda and the narrowest points lead in Formula 1 history.
