The Portuguese Grand Prix took place on 21 October 1984 at the Autódromo Fernanda Pires da Silvaist and was the final race of the season. The Grand Prix covered a distance of 70 laps of 4.35 km each, for a total distance of 304.5 km.
Alain Prost of the Marlboro McLaren International Team started the race from position 2 in his MP4/2 race car and was able to take the lead at the start. Despite several position changes he was able to defend the lead and win the race.
However, as his team-mate Niki Lauda finished the race in second place, it was enough for Lauda to win the Formula 1 World Championship by 0.5 points. It was the third title for Lauda and the narrowest points lead in Formula 1 history.
